An Unwanted Bump
Not every nose has a flat slope from bridge to tip. Some people are born with excess bone or cartilage that create a dorsal hump. Although there is nothing unhealthy about a dorsal hump, patients who want a smooth bridge can request to have the hump removed.
The Tip Points the Wrong Way
Most men have nasal tips that project outward, creating a 90-degree angle with the lip, while most women have nasal tips that project slightly upward. People with nasal tips that point downward or project in a way that is more common for the opposite sex can have the projection altered.
A Lack of Symmetry
Research shows that symmetrical faces are considered the most attractive. People with crooked noses often request to realign the nose so as to achieve symmetry.
The Nostrils Are Too Big
Wide nostrils tend to exaggerate the proportions of the nose. A nose of average size can appear larger based on the size of the nostrils alone. Surgery can narrow the width of the nostrils to their desired size. Patients who feel their nostrils are too small can also widen them via rhinoplasty.
Difficulty Breathing
While many nose reshaping surgeries are performed for cosmetic purposes, some patients seek to improve the flow of air through the nose. Septoplasty (which can be included with traditional rhinoplasty) straightens the cartilage and bone between the two nostrils so that air passes through without obstruction. Repairing a deviated septum may also reduce nosebleeds, congestion and sinus infections.
